The Transportation Department maintains and repairs over 40 miles of surface roadway, curb/gutter, handicap access ramps, and traffic control devices and cross walks. The department is also responsible for street sweeping operations. Seasonal maintenance and repair of ditches and drainage facilities are included in the responsibilities of the department, as well as tree trimming in alleys utilized by refuse vehicles.
The Transportation Department is also responsible for improving the streets, curb, gutter, and sidewalks of the community. The Transportation Department has helped the city to reduce the escalating costs associated with new construction by being responsible for the construction of the new streets using City crews rather than outside contract labor.
The most recent project that the Transportation Department has completed is the Mill Street Project. This project has been in progress for 3 years, which has consisted of the complete reconstruction of the street beginning at the railroad tracks and will eventually end at 15th Street. With city crews performing the work on this project the taxpayers will have saved well over $4 million. This savings allows the city to complete more projects per year than if we had to hire contractors.
