1. Do you give tours of the water treatment plant?

Yes. We encourage individuals and groups take a tour of our facilities. We believe that you will find it extremely educational.

2. Does the City add Fluoride to the water?

No. However, there are small amounts of naturally occurring Fluoride in the City's water.

3. How big is the water distribution system?

There is approximately 60 miles of water main in the system.

4. How many gallons of water are in the water towers?

• The large tower, located at the sports complex, holds 500,000 gallons.
• The small tower, located at 6^th and Campbell, holds 210,000 gallons.
• There is also an underground storage tank, located at the water plant, which holds 500,000 gallons.

5. How many gallons of water does Beloit use per day?

The water treatment plant is capable of producing 1.5 million gallons per day.

• Average usage winter months: 350,000 gallons per day.
• Average usage summer months: 900,000 gallons per day.

In addition to supplying water to the residents of Beloit, the City is the water purveyor for Mitchell County Rural Water District Number 1.

6. My water is rusty, yellow, blue, green, pink, purple, smells bad, tastes funny. Have you had any other reports like this?

7. What is the Hardness of my water?

The average hardness is 100 milligrams per liter (mg/l) or 6 grains per gallon.

Hardness is the measure of the Calcium and Magnesium content of the water. The term was coined from the fact that it is "hard to make soap suds" in this type of water. The water treatment plant utilizes a traditional Lime-Soda Ash softening process to greatly reduce the hardness of the City's potable water.

8. What is the source of Beloit’s water?

Beloit diverts its water from the Solomon River. The City's intake pumps are located at the "dam" in Chautauqua Park.

9. Why are the fire hydrants different colors?

Fire hydrants are color coded based on the gallons per minute of flow they provide. That information is critical to the Fire Department as they battle fires.
